A doctor of medicine Dr. Bhupendra Patel has really lived by the Hippocratic Oath and beyond. Appreciating his good work Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney recognized Dr. Patel as a remarkable man who has dedicated himself in service to others and the whole text of her remarks went into the US Congressional Record. In the remark she mentioned that Dr. Patel who was the Chief of the Department of Medicine at the Mount Sinai Hospital in Queens from 1999 to 2010 is also an important and inspirational voice for the thriving Indian-American community of the country’s greatest city. A selfless advocate for his patients as well as a dedicated and generous philanthropist, ‘Bhupi’ Patel is truly an example and role model for the community. This remark pretty much sums up what a great doctor – Dr. Bhupendra Patel is.
Early Days
‘Bhupi’ – as he is affectionately known to his friends, has been a presence in the medical and Indian communities for the New York tri-state area for over 36 years. A native of Karamsad in the Khaira district of Gujarat, he was born and brought up in Kenya, East Africa. After his MBBS from Baroda Medical College, he came to the US, where he did his medical internship and residency at the Long Island Jewish Hospital, where he worked as an internist. Dr. Patel continued to make important contributions to the field of medical education by serving as an Assistant Clinical Professor of Medicine at the renowned Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York. He is also a Fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians and the American College of Physicians.
Handling With Panache His Philanthropic Acts
Besides his professional assignments, Bhupi always takes out time for the advancement of many social and philanthropic causes which are close to him and help the Indian community at large. He served as the President of the Gujarati Samaj of Greater New York for two years, at the time of the culmination of his tenure he managed to secure a cultural center for the Gujarati community in New York by raising over half a million dollars.
Bhupi is also a founding father of the Nargis Dutt Memorial Foundation. This is an organisation dedicated to improving medical care for cancer patients in India for the past decade, supplying critically needed medical equipment to healthcare facilities.
His commitment to philanthropic causes is not limited to the people belonging to the Asian American community. He serves on the board of the United Community Civic Association in Astoria, Queens. Recently he was elected to the board of “SHAREing and CAREing,” an organization in Queens that for the last 16 years has provided essential services to those afflicted with breast cancer.
He has also served as Chairman of the Advisory Committee of Navnirman Foundation of New York, the primary concern of this foundation is to help and rehabilitate the victims of alcohol and drug abuse. Bhupi was also appointed to serve on the Minority Affairs Council by the then County Executive of Nassau, Hon. Thomas Gulotta.
Dr. Patel’s considerable contributions to medicine and philanthropy have been widely acknowledged. He was the proud recipient of the prestigious Ellis Island Medal of Honour in 2008, and was given the “Outstanding Asian American” award by former New York Governor Mario Cuomo. He has also been honoured by organizations such as the Gujarati Samaj of Greater New York, the Indian Dental Association of the United States, and so on.
But an achievement really close to Dr. Patel’s heart is when he managed to successfully spearhead a campaign to save the life of a 10-year-old boy from Gujarat named Super Patel who was suffering from liver cancer. For this he collected over $150,000 and persuaded two doctors to help have the surgery at the San Francisco Children’s Hospital. Super Patel has recovered and has returned to India.
Remarkable Achievement on US Political Scene
Generally immigrant communities tend to shy away from political participation but through his leadership Bhupi has demonstrated the importance of getting involved and making contributions to the country he is now staying in the United States. He served as President of the Indian American Center for Political Awareness (IACPA) from 2002-04, which works to increase political awareness of and boost the participation of the Indian American community in politics. IACPA provides Congressional internships to over 15 college students annually through the Washington Leadership Program.
Bhupi was the Vice Chairman of the New York Clinton-Gore Committee for election in September 1992. He was one of 15 distinguished Indian Americans invited by President Clinton to the White House to the signing of a religious freedom bill. He also accompanied Clinton on his official visit to India in year 2000 and in 2001 in Gujarat to help with the earthquake disaster. He has also held numerous fundraisers for prominent politicians such as Hillary Clinton for New York Senate, and David Dinkins for Mayor of New York.
He was the co-owner of News India Times publication from 1997 to 2006.
Family
Bhupi is blessed with a loving, caring wife, Indira and three smart, outstanding children. Roopal is in fashion, Shaleen has done MBA in finance from Stanford School of Business and is working with Robati & Robati & Sons, and Reshma has graduated from Mount Sinai and is doing surgical residency in Burlington Belmonte.
