Dr. Urmilesh Arya
Dr. Urmilesh Arya – Pediatrician and Fellow of the American College of Pediatrics,
presently retired as medical director at Queens Bridge Family Health Center, an
affiliate of Wyckoff Heights Medical Center, Cornell New York Presbyterian Hospital.
And serving as C.O.O at Gastroenterology Associates in Brooklyn .
Dr. Arya’s involvement extends beyond medicine into the Indian Community. Her
passion to serve the community goes as far back as 1971 when she received an
Exceptional Service Award from the American Kidney Fund. She has been serving as a
trustee of Hindu Community Center in Flushing, New York and also served as a trustee
of Association of Physicians in America, Long Island Queens. Her immense desire to
serve the community led her get active in the Association of Indians in America. Elected
as a president AIA (New York Chapter) in March 2003-2004, she determined to
accomplish the mission of the Association – “Indian Heritage and American
Commitment”. The hallmark of this Association’s activities is the Deepavali celebration
on the first Sunday of October at South Street Seaport in New York City. She with her
team organized this festival with its theme of” PEACE ON EARTH” in 2003 and
“UNITED WE WIN” in 2004. On this day New York witnesses the culture and heritage
of India through cultural activities such as dance, music, mehndi (Henna), rangoli,
wedding makeup and variety of Indian Cousins etc.
The Association is also involved in activities such as youth development program. In
June of 2003, the association established the Center for Leadership Development
(CLD) to involve college students in American politics.
The motto of AIA is to develop a strong bond of unity among India and America the
two largest and strongest Democracies. To spread this message of unity Dr. Arya
during her presidency celebrated Diwali at the CITY HALL with Council Members,
and GRACY MANSION in the NYC with Mayer Bloomberg and in WHITE
HOUSE in Washington DC with Chief Advisor of the President Mr Carl Rove.
In the year of 2005, with the support of Council members of City of New-York and
her Committee, She achieved Diwali to be listed as a Holiday in the calendar of New
York city hall along with other Holidays, like Christmas and Hanuka. Now onwards
there will be Suspension of Alternate Street parking in all the 5 Boros of New York
City on the Actual Day of Diwali. This was truly a great Honor to Indian
Community.
Dr. Urmilesh Arya has a great passion for education in children , She established
Girls high School in Ballabh Garh Rajasthan and another high School in Udhampur
village of Kashmir. To promote education and Indian culture she sponsored the
Library in India center at Stony Brook University of Long Island NY
As a passion to help the needy children and Veterans she ran the Coat drive and
School bags . She also sponsored and served the food for Homeless and disabled
at Mary Brennon INN Hempstead Soup Kitchen and soup kitchen of Hempstead
Church .
As a part of community service she served 2 villages of Salvador as a Pediatrition.
She participated in South African women’s program in UN and spoke about
Women empowerment.
As a sincerity towards Nation She sponsored a Chair in 9/11 Memorial and one
tree for survival .
See was the past President of Rotarian Club – Hicksville Long Island. During her tenure
besides School Bags and winter Jackets to Homeless in Shelters , club also provided
Blankets to the Veterans and Homeless people and Planted a Japanese Kosovo white
Dog Wood Plant in the Campus of Sunny Old West Bury University with the
message , “Peace on Earth and Friendship, and Service above self”. .
Recently Dr. Arya served as President of National Association of Indians in
America, From 2018 – 2021. The first woman president in the H/O National AIA.
As a President of National AIA , the Association Build the School in Ayoor
Village in Kerala – India , (This school was destroyed by Flooding in Kerala in
1918). And a High School in Khanwa Village Rajasthan India . In 2020 She
send Blankets and clothings for the VICTIMS of PUERTO RICO Earth Quake .
During Covid time in 2020 – 2021 . We send Oxygen Concentrators , Ventilators
to India and diatributed Facial mask and gloves and Hot meals to first line workers
in various Hospitals in Long Island NY .
Dr. Urmilesh Arya received an honor award by various community organizations
Such as Shri Swami Narayan Sanstha , Hindu Community Center of Flushing ,New
York,
At Neelkanth Dham in Richmond Hill, . She also received Honor Award by County
Supervisor Tom Swazi during International Cultural Progranm of International
Cultural Grouop,, Honor Award at the Town Hall of long Island –Nassau County during
the Diwali Program . In the Year of 2006, she was honored by “Association of
Indians in Long Island. “And YMCA of Cross Island of New York.In
She received “ BHARTIYA SAMAJ SHIROMANI” award by Akhil Vishwa Hindi
Samiti OF New York
Dr Arya has been recipient of 2004 Physician of the Year Award
& Gold Medal from National Republican Congress Committee in recognition
of Meritorious Services and an outstanding support of President Bush.
On June 9th 2017 she received Bharat Gorav Honor Award at United Nation
She received Honor Award by Panjabi Society and Nurgis Datt
Foundation in 2018
Recently Dr. Arya was Honored at Swami Narayan Temple flushing on
Sep 25 th in Pramukh Swami’s 100 th Birthday celebration, where she was the Key
note speaker
Dr. Arya lives with her husband, Dr. Yashpal Arya a practicing
Gastroenterologist ,2 sons ,one daughter and 3 Grandchildren.
